Film Analysis-Hanna 2011

Hanna is a 16 years old girl. But her living influences her so much. From the beginning scene, she is hunting an antelope. Not all the girl can slaughter a huge animal like she does. What she does was taught by his father-Erik Heller. That is the reason she knew few languages and she good in fighting and shooting. She was prepared to help Erik to kill. (Thomas Caldwell,2011)
Screen shot 1
Screen shot 1 showing the setting which reflecting the place they are living. It’s empty. Look at the snow, Erik walks in straight line. Hanna is beside him at the first but then she turns and walks in circle which around him. From this particular scene, we could see how the story will go on. The straight line reflected they are living together and they have the same mind set. When the circle starts which Hanna goes out from the wilderness she will be the one who helps Erick. Yes, to kill Merissa. Focus on Erik, he forward the sun. This means he has a hope to achieve which quite far from the place he stays. Hanna, she stands behide him. She looks at him all the way because he is the one she relies on and the one she trust the most. This is respect as a daughter of him.

CIA operative Marissa Wiegler is a professional and intelligent woman. Her extremely pasty white skin and short neat ginger hair shows that she is a cold blood person towards anyone. She shapes a very serious and strict antagonist image to audience like everyone is afraid of her. We also can see that Marissa is a perfectionist because she brushes teeth until bleeding. And there’s a row of toothbrush stuff. In addition, Hanna’s life is just like a fairy tales story. So Marissa dress up in green including coat, gloves even shoes. This represents a wicked witch in fairy story. (Tony Dayoub, 2011)

Screen shot 2
Screen shot 2 is the establishing scene for Merissa and Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) office in United States. From the setting, audiences can clearly see the huge official seal for CIA on the wall. The United States’ flags are placing beside the seal. Bluish lighting bring out that CIA office is a serious working place without much harmony.  Even, I would like to say that they are not humanist. The actor movement tells audiences that Merissa’s status is higher than the man beside him. She walks 2 steps forward and she is straight all the way.

Whereas Hanna is Rapunzel in the fairy tales story .In this movie, we can see that Hanna wearing cool colors clothes like grey, black or white all the time.

Picture 1: Hanna's costume
To shows that she is extraordinary,  her eyes color and eyebrows is extraordinary than human being. And also apply very natural make up on her neither eye shadows nor lipstick to highlight that she raised up in forest, isolation from the city. She is a very innocent girl.  However the moment when she interrogates by CIA operators, she wears orange jumpsuit. Orange jumpsuit represented been jailed or prisoner in American movies. Whereas when she hanging out with the only friend in the movie, her make-up turns to heavy make-up and well dressing to conform the society nowadays.

Her father, Erik is a very solid and symbolize protective. He actually protects Hanna from being kill by antagonist and love her very much.

Screen shot 3
This is the first time Hanna meets with people beside her father. This particular scene tells audiences about how different was she and others people. She is in dark, trying to look at outside from the door gap. This reflecting about her characteristic where she is just a little girl who never goes out from the wilderness. She is scare and insecure. Her pupil changes from big to small. This is the reaction when eyes see thing from darkness to brighter vision. She sees lights from outside.

Screen shot 4

Screen shot 4 uses  to establish  the shot that Hanna is looking around at that place like desert  yet she is alone and helpless. Though at the unknown place, she is still independent !

Screen shot 5
After ran out from the safe house, Hanna rents a room. Television, kettle, fan, lamp, telephone and etc are something new to her. She has seen it and heard it from Erik but this is the first time she sees it in real. When the boss walks out, sound from TV is horrifying her, come with the boiling of the water, the ringing sound of phone. The camera spins in 360 degree around her. (refer picture 2)

Picture 2: Hanna feels insecure in the rented room
The audio is slightly louder to create the feel of scare to audiences. Montage is using in this sequence. Images from TV, lamps, shower and herself. This montage uses to explain what she sees inside the room and these are things that make her scare when she is alone in the room.

Screen shot 6

Hanna meets a guy. They don’t know each other well. The distance between them tells the audience about this. Both of them sit in straight. This is because they are nervous. Hanna never has been in love and she has no idea what will go on. The guy is trying to get closer to Hanna but he doesn’t know what should do to make her feel comfortable. They even scare to look at each other and try to avoid from any eyes contact. When the guy trying to kiss her and get closer to her, an instinctive reaction which she defends her from others to get closer to her scared her friends and the guy’s friend too. She doesn’t mean to hurt him but this is her instinctive reaction that trained since she was young.

Screen shot 7

Wheel of fortune, is the term that I would like to name it. Erik kills Isaacs and then he been killed by Merissa. Both of them placed on this wheel. The wheel made by 3 basic colour, red, green and blue. Erik placed on red; Isaacs placed on green and the blue is empty. In this particular scene, the blue was reserved by Merissa for Hanna. But on the other hands, the blue empty place is one of the clues for audience to guess who is the next will die, either Merissa or Hanna.
Screen shot 8

When Hanna back to Knepfler’s house she found out that he was dead. Red light representing the meaning of dangerous and her anger of his death. Hanna is not safe. Merissa is looking for her and wants to kill her. Erik was killed by Melissa and now the turn of Knepfler. She is angry with all happening at that moment.

Now let's us see the editing part of this movie.

>The beginning of the movie : when the
antelope been shoot down Hanna but still escaping from her,  the shot begins to blur because of its injury and starting to see unclearly. The director let audience sense at the shoe of deer.

Above scene is when she is trying to escape from the “jail” , the montage is rapid editing to
reflect the environment and feelings of Hanna. It is an example of fast pacing. She is anxious and alone facing a bunch of bad people to track down her without her beloved father.

The scene when Hanna visits Knepfler, a friend of Eric is an old magician. When she goes inside the house like “candy house” which full of unique stuff , she feels everything is very fresh and special. Her inner excitement can be seen from the spinning editing.

As Hanna is running through the dark tunnel after kill Marissa, the bright lighting in front of her emphasizes that there is a path, her way to new life. There is a deer appears in the tunnel. It is same as beginning of the movie when Hanna hunts the antelope. Deer or antelope absolutely symbolize as target for her. Hanna sees everyone as her hunter inclusive Marissa thus she has no fear anymore at the ending but the one to chase after Marissa. She has no choice to turn back
Jay, 2011) because she was born as an unordinary and perfect soldier. Her future life is going to track down the target !

However, there is a scene that Hanna and Erik cannot meet up with each other when lack of technology communication. I starting to appreciate the invention of mobile phone when Hanna and father finding each other. The useful of mobile phone nowadays!~anyway, relax for a moment !=)

People always say audio plays a very important role in a movie. Obviously "Hanna" fully utilize the soundtrack of the Chemical Brothers. The scene when Marissa interrogate the family members of Hanna so called "friends", the antagonist whistles the music is upbeat but not relaxing at all. It makes audience feel stress towards the family. The smart director place the audio at the proper moment! Don't believe? listen to it ~

  2. Well... It would be better if you provide some clip and visual aids to elaborate your editing part.

I thinks you are left out to discuss the pace of editing toward this film. For example: Is that fast pacing or slow pacing using in the film.

Can you state one example of Time lapse that used in the film?

    Thank you =)
